Cookies and other things that make my Chromebook not work quite right.

Cookies by David Leggett via CC 2.0

Sometimes, when you add extensions and visit websites, your chromebook can have settings added from that website.  They might be advertisements, or resets of search settings.  Sometimes these are called 'cookies'.

Here are some tips for cleaning out the junk!

Google Sheets

Google Sheets is the G Suite's version of a spreadsheet.

Spreadsheets are an electronic document in which data is arranged in the rows and columns of a grid and can be manipulated and used in calculations.  In MS office, Spreadsheets are created in Excel.  Most formulas that work in Excel, also work in Sheets.

Here is a simple tutorial of some basic functions, in under 5 minutes.

T.H.I.N.K. Before you Post....

Everyday, someone gets hurt by someone else's words.  We sometimes say nasty things.  Sometimes, hurtful, harmful things.  These things can really stick with someone.

I try to think... "would I say that in front of my Grandma?"

I realize that not everyone has the same Grandma.  Mine helped me learn to bake, milk cows, drive a tractor, and taught me some manners. Maybe you have someone else you have in your life like that... that you would not want to have them think any less of you.

Would my grandma be proud of what I just posted online?

Not actually my grandma.

Many students and teachers have accounts for many things.  Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube,... the list probably is longer than my arm.  Sometimes multiple accounts, based on who might read it.

I want to make my grandma proud, every time she opens her computer and sees something I posted.  If you want to T.H.I.N.K. of a way to remember if you should post something... try this approach.

Is it True?

Are you about to post or share something that you can't prove?  There are many people out there that are spreading lies, and half truths.  Consider using an online fact checker, such as snopes.com.

Is it Helpful?

You might have a talent, a skill, or something beautiful you created.  It might help someone else that is trying to learn to do that awesome 'thing'.

Is it Inspiring?

Does it help motivate others? Does it make you want to get up and dance? Is it too awesome for words?

Is it necessary?

Sometimes, we just over-share.  Sending out stuff that just doesn't need to be there.  Sometimes, we have to post something, or email something, maybe for class work.  But does it need to be said?

Is it Kind?

If you are posting something that is not nice,  I just do not think Grandma would approve.

YouTube Settings for Students

Waupaca Middle School is getting ready to have YouTube open for all students.  In Spanish class, students are starting to create content for their 'Mi Familia' project.  In this project, students will be creating videos and editing them directly in YouTube, with YouTube editor.

These are the recommended settings for students for Privacy concerns.  With these settings, your videos will only be shared with people that you give the link to, and no one else. They are not searchable, and cannot be commented on by others.

2) Try a Hard Reset

Screenshot hard reset instructions
Then restart with the power key.

3) Is it an Extension?

Some extensions can cause issues. Did you just install an extension?  Do you have a million of them running? Chrome extensions can slow down your Chromebook.
Check by going to chrome://extensions

screenshot disable extension

4) Is it a Theme?

Did you just install a Theme, and your Chromebook is acting funny?  Go to chrome://settings and reset to 'Default Theme'
screenshot reset to default theme

5) Is it a Keyboard issue?

Some keyboard issues have been reported on the Lenovo Chromebooks. Others are working well. But, you might be able to solve it, if it is a International Keyboard setting.

Try toggling between INTL and US Keyboard.

Still not working?  Ask your teacher if you can have a pass to see Mr. Schultz in the library.  He might be able to fix it, but he may also have to send it for service.
If it is truly broken, let your teacher know about it!
